This pilot project was led by CMHA in collaboration with
our community partners

Benefits of Reducing & Reusing

Choosing second-hand items through thrifing is both practical and environmentally responsible. By selecting pre-owned goods, you prolong the life of items, preventing them from ending up in landfills prematurely. This approach reduces the need for new products, saving resources and energy, and also often involves minimal packaging and transportation. In essence, thrifting is more than just a shopping choice; it’s a commitment to sustainability and mindful consumption. By supporting this eco-friendly practice, you play a role in waste reduction and promote a more sustainable future.

Did you know small and medium sized businesses make up over 99% of the Canadian economy, employing more than 10 million people!

The Thrift Trail

Many stores that promote re-use in any capacity are locally owned and operated which means by shopping at these stores you
support the local economy and keep money in this community.

Did you know that nine million tons of furniture go to landfills annually?

Due to the energy intensity of furniture-making, it produces much more carbon dioxide emissions to create new furniture pieces than to restore the old furniture. Compounded by issues of deforestation and land degradation, refinishing old furniture keeps trees standing.

Did you know manufacturing a pair of Levi’s produces greenhouse gasses at the same rate as driving 128 km?

Thrifting/Second hand promotes sustainable practices by reducing the demand for new products and supporting responsible manufacturing.
